I saw the band Silverghost twice this weekend, though I only really watched them the second night. After work on Friday I went to Sakana to hang out with my friend from bike club who works there, watch the Tigers game and have some dinner. The Pop Project was playing later that night at The Loving Touch as part of the DIY Street Fair Launch Weekend and I overheard that one of the other guys working at Sakana was in Silverghost, who were playing as well. After the game ended I headed over hoping it was early enough that I could sit down at the bar. I ran into a couple guys from The Pop Project that I knew and chatted for a little while. My chair was facing away from the stage, but what I heard of Silverghost and the other opening band, Computer Perfection, was really good. By the time The Pop Project came on I forfeited my seat in favor of standing.
On Saturday bike club had an excellent around-town ride. Highlights included taking over Nine Mile and a group figue-eight in an empty parking lot. I rolled the sleeves up on my t-shirt and had arm-length burns by late afternoon. Every year I let myself get too much sun a couple times and develop a protective tan for the rest of the summer. Over the next four months of weekends I'm probably going to wear the same pair of brown shorts, and I've decided to stop wearing socks with my slip-on Vans - both very comfortable wardrobe choices. After a few hours we went to one of the other officers' house for a backyard barbecue. I was debating between another night at The Loving Touch and relaxing with a few episodes of House when a couple of friends asked me to come with them to The Majestic Cafe. I really didn't want to take myself anywhere outside of Ferndale, but I was offered a ride so with the promise of a couple hours to go home and rest I agreed to tag along. Back home I listened to the beginning of the Tigers game and some music before my friend came over to pick me up. Once we got to the cafe, he and I talked for a while about the idea of starting a band. I've never had a lot of musical talent, but he seems serious about the idea and I would really enjoy giving it a shot. One of the guys from Five Three Dial Tone records was taking "Hello My Name Is:" stickers and putting them on people, filling the blank in with instant nicknames/labels. I thought it was a clever idea, but would be too nervous to do something like that myself. I didn't bother asking for one, because I knew I'd only take his observation too seriously. We had come to see Lettercamp who put on a really great show. They placed a white screen with a rear-projected red light in the center of the stage which created a silhouette when the singer stood behind it. Even after she came out front the glowing red square provided a cool visual. As I mentioned, Silverghost played, and it was nice to actually watch their performance this time. We stayed to see Deastro who was playing last and who I thought I'd seen before. I must have been thinking of a different band because their sound wasn't anything like I remembered - which was very screamo-ish; something I might've liked when I was in tenth grade. More entertaining was a homeless guy who came in and started dancing with some hipsters. When their supposed last song was finished, they prompted their own encore. "Do you want us to play one more?" asked the singer, but to me it sounded like "We're not done, is that okay with you?" I was tired, and really, I didn't want them to play one more, but staying was the polite thing to do.
Turning off the flash on my new camera plus the red lighting produced some really cool images:
This morning I tried to download the new Radio Dept. album, but what I got was mislabeled songs from various older releases. It was like a homework assignment trying to figure out what the names of the songs really were, which I wanted to know because they were still good.
