album review: This Is Happening

You will hear this album. The summer of 2010 is going to be inspired by these songs as much as they were inspired by the summers before them. James Murphy writes like a psychiatrist telling us the cold hard truths of the lives we lead while reminding us to embrace them and never regret the good or the bad times. This is the soundtrack to better days - to growing up and still being a kid at heart. It is self-centered yet not quite self-indulgent. In every cowbell hit and synthesized sound effect there is an ego at play that screams righteousness.  It is the powdered sugar on the cream of the indie music crop. It will buy you another drink and tell you "we should sleep in separate beds".

My first listen while I scrubbed the floors of my house as a first act of Spring cleaning had me hooked. I fall in love again every time I play it in my car. I can't imagine writing this album more perfectly and it's impossible to not imagine future parties that might as well just have it playing on repeat.
