This time last year I was fixing up the house I had just bought and slowly moving things from my apartment on the other side town. After a long day of redecorating I was glad to visit a couple of my friends who were having a joint birthday party, but I arrived late and was too tired to stay long.
This year when they threw what might be their final party together I made it a point to make my attendance a priority. There was a pretty constant stream of people in and out; most of them high school friends that I didn't know. One of the girls had her Zune playing in the living room and I knew like half the songs. I hung out with the other girl's boyfriend in the basement for a bit and I complimented him when he put on a vinyl copy of Spoon's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Usually hearing familiar music in a social setting distracts me, but on this night it simply complimented the good time I was having. Back upstairs in the living room there was a heated game of Catch Phrase going on and I jumped right into the circle. It was upsetting when I caught a glimpse of the time and remembered that I had to work the next morning.
