At the end of a long week, and with the knowledge that I wouldn't be working the next day (which I had been anticipating) I happily came home to leftover pizza and a night in front of the television. I decided to check my Netflix Instant Queue and saw at the very top the documentary
Art & Copy: a documentary
"about advertising and inspiration". I had no real interest in placing myself as deeply into the advertising world when I set out to become a video editor several years ago, but now a third of my facebook friends are clients. What this movie did for me was make me feel that if I had seen it when I was still seeking a career, I would enjoy pursuing one in advertising. I appreciated the movie's recognition of "bad" advertising and subsequent praise of exciting, groundbreaking and genuinely creative ideas. The kind that I believe I could have one day (especially if I worked in an office as awesome as Wieden+Kennedy in Portland.) The movie culminated in a strange montage of flashy imagery and empty statements that didn't do the rest of the movie justice.
