Memorial Day marked the end of the DIY Street Fair Launch Weekend. I had spent the day cleaning my house and avoiding an intense thunderstorm that swept through the area in the mid-afternoon. After a trip to Meijer and stopping by work for a minute, I called around to find a Thai restaurant that was open of the holiday and Thai On Main in Royal Oak came through for me. If you've never been there, prepare for a sickly sweet smell when you open the door. I intended to try their take on a vegetable coconut milk curry, but either I accidentally ordered the one with brown sauce or I have another reason to not particularly care for them. While I was waiting, a guy with an unrecognizable foreign accent came in and started reading off the menu to someone over the phone. I guessed they were probably unfamiliar with the American custom of unofficially starting summer at the end of May and had resorted to whatever restaurant they could find that was open.
It was lightly raining outside when I biked up to The Loving Touch at 9:30. I met some people that I had seen around town but never really had a chance to talk to. The Meadowlarks, composed of two of my friends from another great band, Motherwhale, was my main reason for coming out. They trade off bass and guitar duties and are supplemented by a Maestro Rhythm King. One of the guys - who lives across the street from me - explained how the antique drum machine had been out of commission, with a female A/C where the input jack should have been, and how plugging in a lamp had brought it to life. The Meadowlarks incorporated an array of feedback effects and spent a good portion of the show on one knee adjusting their foot pedals. Starting up the Rhythm King shifted them into a constructed sound, seeming to grow from the antique box as opposed to being supplemented by it. Flipping the machine off ebbed their sound back to a wave of dissonance before swirling back once it was turned on again. I regretted not seeing their first show, when they had incorporated a harmonium, and look forward to hearing what these guys will produce in the future. I was tired and left shortly after they finished, but not before one of the guys invited me to grab a drink with him sometime next week. I always thought him and I would get along if we ever spent time together.
