Javs! Javs! Javs!

My weekend was so long and exciting that I'm only now getting around to writing about it. Saturday started off normal enough with a bike club ride around town and a stop for ice cream at Frosty Freeze in Berkley. They had some awesome old school signage which sold me on a delicious german chocolate soft serve cone. After ice cream we headed back to Ferndale for a barbecue.  Being without cable, I was anxious to find somewhere I could watch the US versus Ghana World Cup game. The girl hosting the barbecue was nice enough to put it on, and while everyone eventually migrated outside, I remained stationed in front of the television. I had expected Ghana to completely dominate but the US played a great game of disruptive defense, though in the end it just wasn't enough. After the game ended I joined everyone outside where we hung around for a few hours. My other best friend who'll be moving into my house was coming over, so my current roommate and I headed back home before it got dark.

We drove down to Detroit to see Javelins who were playing a free show at the Majestic Cafe. As rarely as they play and for no cover at one of my favorite venues... there was no way I was missing them.  We made it down there around 10:00, expecting the first band to be finishing up. Doors had only just opened, so we opted to walk around the city for an hour. When we made it back Javelins were still setting up. They kicked off their show with a new instrumental and threw in a couple other songs I hadn't heard before. It was intriguing to hear their new material, but I tell everyone that Javelins are amazing live because I get so focused in on their songs I'm familiar with. Their rhythms and enveloping guitar effects just wash over me whenever I see them.

Sunday was spent lazily at home, consciously avoiding the rainy weather playing Earthbound and listening to music. There was supposed to be another bike club ride that evening, but no one was at the Mobil station when I arrived. I went over to my friend's house and the two of us joined her friends for a few drinks at Bastone. After we separated I came back to Ferndale where bike club was supposed to have our "afterglow" with free pool at the Loving Touch. Much to my delight, I discovered the new LCD Soundsystem album had been added to the jukebox, so I put on "One Touch", "I Can Change" and "Pow Pow". One of these days I'm going to go there and put the entire album on. My roommates were already there and we joined with a girl from bike club for some games of pool.
